Eulogies for our furry, feathery, shelled, and scaly friends

To some, eulogizing a pet may seem shallow, even ridiculous. But to the owners (or human parents) of these animals that died, the loss is as devastating as human death. To them, their pets are not just animals but family members or cherished best friends.

Many people, especially in certain continents, don’t or can’t have children. So pets often take the place of offspring to stave off loneliness and solitude, particularly during the twilight years. That said, one doesn’t need to be sad or alone to have a pet.

Any pet owner will testify that they have reaped medical, social, and psychological benefits just being with a beloved pet. That is why there are service animals for the differently abled, emotional support animals for the mentally challenged, and animal hospital visitors—and they’re not limited to children’s wards.

So, understand that for many, the death of a pet is similar to losing a child or a friend. It is just as heartbreaking. We hope that these stories of pets who have crossed into the great beyond will warm your hearts and console you in your time of need. Know that you are not the only one who has experienced the loss of a beloved pet. We join you in your grief.
